Let's can the Spam

Last nite my daughters girlfriend asked me what I might suggest she could do to put a halt to all of the spam she is suddenly getting ... it is a problem that I have also been dealing with of late. Sooo I figured it was high time that I popped my solution up here for all of you to share.

As time passes here on the Internet selling e-mail addresses has become big business.
It is not uncommon for me to get around 100 pieces of Spam a day.
There are many who have solutions to the problem and I have tried a number of them … the best to date is rather simple and here it is.

I run outlook express … so this system works there … one might want to try the same method on other mail clients.

This is my setup for outlook express and how I got it to start.

First set up your e-mail options and you find them by opening your outlook express going to Tools … Options.

When the window opens click each tab … below are the examples of how my mail is set up … you might want to change your options to better suit your needs.

mail9.jpg - 25814 Bytes Now that you have made all of your selections you click the Apply button then OK … this then sets up your mail options.

I did not go into the Signature Tab as that can be set up anyway you choose … I usually do not use that function.

Next we will address the general layout of the Outlook Express Window … I personally do not like to have a preview pane. Mostly because of security reasons … if someone sends a virus I do not want it automatically coming right on my system … I choose what mail I want to read and delete all of the spam without ever opening it.

This is my setup and how one gets to the setup.
Go to View … Layout and when the window pops up you can use this setup.

Next we will set up your mail so that you can fight spam.

The concept is quite simple.

When your e-mail address is harvested and somehow ends up on a bulk mail list and sold to every Tom, Dick and Harry. There is little your isp can do to protect you. In fact there is very little you can do to protect yourself from ending up on one of these lists.

This mail service has a function to create rules. We are going to do the process upside down. Instead of creating rules to block Spam we will create rules to let our friends into our mail inbox and ban everyone else. So lets go for it.

mail11.jpg - 19938 Bytes

First we will create a new box and call it 0Spam (that is a zero not a cap.O) … the reason for this is the box will be placed first in line right under your drafts folder.

mail12.jpg - 14450 Bytes mail13.jpg - 9290 Bytes

When you click OK the 0Spam folder will reside under your Drafts folder.
Now because Outlook will not let us create a rule sending mail to the inbox we must create another inbox … I call mine My Inbox and it is in the same folder as Inbox … this is what my Outlook Express Local Folders now look like.

Now we are going to create our first rule.

That rule will send every piece of mail sent to us into the 0Spam folder be it from friend of foe.

Go to Message … Create Rule from Message. A window will pop open to allow you to create your rule … look at fig1 below and follow it. You are directing all mail to automatically go to your 0Spam folder.

You can now check out your daily 0Spam folder … when you find a friend popping into that folder you simply create a rule to allow that friend to be moved to you’re My Inbox … as you continue to do this process all of your friends will be sent to you’re My Inbox and the rest will remain in the 0Spam

It makes it pretty simple to quickly scan your 0Spam folder periodically to see if a new friend has slipped into the 0Spam and create a rule to send to My Inbox and delete the Spam.

Now to create a rule to add someone from your mail list … highlight their incoming message … then click the Message at the top of the screen and go to Create Rule from Message … when the window pops open create your rule following the example in Fig. 2 below.

You are now on your way to tossing a wrench into the Spam-mongers clock works.
Don’t ya just love it?
